Beichuan has a long history and is the birthplace of the ancient heroes of water control. It is called “the hometown of the gods” and was officially established in the Northern Zhou Dynasty Emperor Wudi (566). In 1952, Beichuan County Town moved from Zhicheng Town (now Yuli Township) to Qushan Town, 60 kilometers away from Mianyang City, 160 kilometers away from Chengdu, and built-up area of 0.9 square kilometers, divided into new and old urban areas. Before the earthquake, the resident population and floating population of the county were more than 30,000. The 8.0-magnitude earthquake that struck at 14:28 on May 12, 2008, the Beichuan County was devastated and instantly turned into ruins. More than 80% of the houses in the old city collapsed or were buried by the mountains. More than 70% of the new urban areas collapsed. All become dangerous buildings. In particular, the mountain surrounding the county town collapsed due to the earthquake and destroyed a large number of buildings, causing heavy casualties.

In accordance with the spirit of the instructions of the former Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council, we took a series of protective measures against the old county town of Beichuan after the earthquake, and started construction of the earthquake memorial hall at Renjiaping, making it the world’s first to preserve the original earthquake and flood disasters, witnessing and demonstrating. A social, cultural, scientific, and natural heritage protection platform that integrates functions such as commemoration, warning, science, and scientific research.
